1st Meeting Feedback.

Thanks to all who came to the 1st meeting today.

It was an interesting debate, and the topic proved to be a strong one of interest for all attendees.

The next meeting will happen in a week or two and the topic will of course be different. The plan is for two parties to present their pieces on the motion, in the traditional debate format.

Today was the beginning, I am sure this will be something special and unlike the other 'societies' this will stay with Kingston University for years to come.

Debating Society Inaugural Meeting

We are pleased to announce the inaugural meeting will be held on:

1st Meeting Day/Time?

The proposed time for meetings is currently for Tuesdays at 5 or 5.30pm at the Kingston Hill Campus. The date/time was chosen as it would mean members would ensure no clashes with any lectures.

Would this time/date be appropriate for our members?

The topic will be along the lines of is religion relevant in 2009? Leave a COMMENT!

Meeting Format

This is the format for the meetings:

• The meeting begins at the specified time with a short introduction at the beginning after which the debate will commence.

• Opening speeches are made for the affirmative and opposing view on a topic after which the motion is thrown open to the floor.
  

• Votes will be then taken on the topic and the winning argument announced.

Other types of meeting will occur. You will will hear more in due course.

The KU Debating Society Has Begun.

I am not a fan of societies. They tend to have little or no attendance at meetings, and few actually engage with the students. A debating society however, is different.

Learning how to debate is a skill, it can teach you how to think on your feet, being able to put forward arguments on a variety of subjects and most of all it provides one with the life skill of public speaking. Its all about improving your confidence and changing your perspectives.

It has always got to me why our ever so progressive university has a societies like the Persian or Somali society yet it does not have a debating society, a real place where students can engage in real intellectual debate. All of the TOP Universities in the country have flourishing societies that already participate in regional and international debating tournaments.

I and others have have taken it upon themselves to set up the Kingston university's 1st debating society.

Our vision for the future is for Kingston University Students to be able to stand on the same stages and compete in the same tournaments with the best Debating Societies of the country, be it Harvard, Yale or any University in the Top 10 University Debate Rankings. It may take a year, two years or maybe ten to achieve this, but we are determined we will succeed.

Once set up I and others will be posting regularly on this space about meetings and new ideas/initiatives so be involved, after all it is being part of societies such as this which matters. So invest in yourself and get something more out of your university. 2009 is going to be a fun year.
